CGIAR provides scientific and innovative approaches to end world inequalities and solve hunger. Today CGIAR also focuses on reshaping food, land and water systems globally in the climate crisis. One CGIAR is the last strategy that focuses on fast, innovative, cost-efficient and sustainable solutions deployed globally towards achieving global goals for 2030.
To mark the 50-year anniversary since the founding of CGIAR, on January 25 during the Climate Adaptation Summit (CAS 2021), sees the launch of the campaign, “CGIAR’s 50 years of innovation that changed the world”.
To celebrate this, CGIAR has launched its new CGIAR Research and Innovation Strategy at AGRA’s event Rising to the Challenge of Adapting Agriculture and Food Systems.
Today, CGIAR is made up of 13 Centres and Alliances that are embarking on a significant and exciting transformation with its unified and impactful OneCGIAR Strategy. Climate and food crises can only be solved in tandem, with climate and agriculture science – with that, we can build back better for the people and the planet. Science and innovation will give a chance for agriculture to be part of the climate solution.
The challenge the world faces is to transform our food, land and water systems in a climate crisis – a new strategy for a new era. The goal of the OneCGIAR Strategy is to put the climate crisis at the heart of global research on food security.
At the same time, CGIAR will continue to work towards achieving the SDGs by 2030. We need to radically realign food systems and double agriculture funding to end hunger and halt climate change.
CGIAR is targetting 5 “Impact Areas” focusing on 5 SDGs:
- Nutrition, health and food security
- Poverty reduction, livelihoods and jobs
- Gender equality, youth and inclusion
- Climate adaptation and mitigation
- Environmental health and biodiversity
They build a strategy driven through 3 impact pathways (cf. image) – science-based innovation,targeted capacity development and advice on policy – across 6 strategic areas around the globe:
- Central, West Asia and North Africa
- Latin America and the Caribbean
- West and Central Africa
- East and Southern Africa
- South Asia
- Southeast Asia and Pacific.
The development of these pathways leads to 3 Action Areas – systems transformation, resilient agrifood systems and genetic innovation – that brings new ways of working to each strategic areas of the globe (cf. image).
