In Bomet County, Kenya, bean farming begins with women. 🫘
Women prepare the land, select the seeds, harvest the crop, making sure food reaches the table. For Hellen Keti Ruto of Abosi Farmers’ Cooperative, beans aren’t just a crop. They’re nutrition, income, resilience, and ...dignity.
With support from Pan African Bean Research Alliance (PABRA) and the Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organisation (KALRO), and county government partners, farmers like Hellen have gained access to improved bean varieties, hands-on training, and better agronomic practices — helping production leap from 2 bags per acre to 8.
During this International Year of the Woman Farmer, we’re calling for more than recognition. We’re calling for real investment: in quality seeds, fair markets, value addition, and a seat at the decision-making table.
As Hellen puts it: “If we truly want to transform our food systems, we must invest in women — not just in words, but in action.”

This year, Beans is How is collaborating with @securingsafefood to highlight inclusive recipes that incorporate beans.
...Lentils, beans, and other pulses, are naturally allergen-free staples that can be transformed into nutritious, accessible dishes. By making beans a regular part of the menu, families, canteens, restaurants and food service can accommodate those with allergies or other adverse reactions to foods and support both their health and food budget.
Securing Safe Food (SSF) partners with food pantries and community programs to improve access to nutritionally balanced, allergen-free foods, upholding its mission to ensure food security for all.
