The Food Foundation and Veg Power have announced a new UK-wide initiative with one simple mission: to get people eating more beans, pulses and legumes. Beans is How is excited to be a part of this!
Funded by the National Lottery Community Fund, the campaign is calling on chefs, retailers and manufacturers, wholesalers, food service companies, youth organisations, community groups and caterers to join them in the bean revolution and commit to serving and selling more beans as well as turbocharging the marketing and promotion of beans.
On top of encouraging participation from national food businesses, other activities include a schools’ campaign and outreach, running student focused activities with Kent University Student Union, and working with Birmingham City Council to activate the campaign at a local level.

Beans in UK – Quick Facts:
-
Part of your 5 a day, regularly consuming beans can improve your digestive health, make you feel fuller longer, and help to improve your overall health.
-
People in the UK aren’t eating enough fibre. 120g of cooked beans (half a large can) provides around a third of your daily recommended fibre.
-
The UK Government recommends eating 80g of beans, peas and lentils a day, or 3 tablespoons. Adding a portion of beans to meals gives you 1 more of your 5 a day.
-
In a recent Cambridge University, 2024 study, it was estimated that UK citizens are eating an average of 28g per person per day of beans, peas and pulses. Our parallel analysis of NDNS data showed that more than 40% of participants were not eating any beans and pulses (excluding peas).
