On December 10th, Food Day at COP28, FAO launched the first of three groundbreaking reports (global, regional and national in focus), which combined will provide a comprehensive roadmap to achieve SDG2 without breaching the 1.5 degrees celsius–to the accelerate climate actions that can transform agrifood systems, and help achieve good food for all today and tomorrow.
The roadmap outlines 10 “pivotal domains” or areas for immediate action for contextualisation:
1- Livestock
2- Fisheries and Aquaculture
3- Crops
4- Enabling Healthy Diets for All
5- Forests and Wetlands
6 – Soil and Water
7- Food Loss and Waste
8 – Clean Energy
9 – Inclusive Policies
10- Data.
The roadmap lays out pathways to meet food security and nutrition needs and improve access to healthy diets while shifting consumption, production and land use patterns in agrifood systems from contributing significantly to climate change to becoming a carbon sink over the next 30 years, in alignment with the Paris Climate Agreement.
These actions are based on evidence gathered and analyzed by FAO over several years. It is a starting point and foundation for taking contextualized action. Since its launch and over the next few days, weeks and months, stakeholders can build on this foundation to further define and refine actions that are needed in different regions and settings. What the global roadmap lays out in no uncertain terms is that we are running out of time to meet the 2030 global goals, especially the goal to end hunger and all forms of malnutrition, and to prevent the worst impacts of climate change by staying within the planetary boundaries. Transforming agrifood systems are key to unlocking and accelerating change on several fronts.
