International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste September 29, 2024

Overview

This day is organized in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), with both organisations jointly leading the day’s events.

The primary aim is to increase awareness about the significance of food loss and waste issues and explore potential solutions at all levels. It also seeks to encourage global efforts and collective action towards achieving Sustainable Development Goal Target 12.3, which aims to halve global food waste per capita at the retail and consumer levels by 2030 and reduce food losses throughout the production and supply chains.

What is the difference between food loss and food waste”

Food loss is the decrease in the quantity or quality of food resulting from decisions and actions by food suppliers in the chain, excluding retailers, food service providers and consumers (SOFA, 2019).
